A Message from Our Principal

Dear Families,

Homer Davis Elementary School continues to excel as we rise toward high expectations. This past month successfully promoted the importance of literacy during February’s Love of Reading festivities. School visitors commented on the impressive quality of student projects, appreciated staff members’ dedicated work, and recognized school-wide efforts to challenge students with high learning expectations. Each Homer Davis staff member works diligently to offer unique opportunities for students. Our committed effort is recognized and appreciated!

This year Homer Davis will administer a new state test during the assessment window of April 13 - April 17. Third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will take the Arizona's Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching (AzMERIT). This test provides a way to measure your child’s academic skill and growth. The AzMERIT results will provide information as to how your children are performing at their grade level of instruction, how we compare to students and schools throughout the state, and how our school is performing in regards to the implementation of the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards (AZCCRS). The results of these assessments will also determine the performance level of our school, but there is currently no specific information in regards to the scoring system. Most importantly, our teaching staff continues to devote a tremendous amount of time and effort in preparing students to achieve successful results on this assessment. We are providing rigorous and relevant lessons that focus on oral and written communication, reading comprehension, and problem-solving skills that align to the AZCCRS. Homer Davis has worked very hard to prepare your children to be successful. This testing week is when students will put forth their best effort and let their academic success shine!

Presented for your review are a few strategies that parents may use to support the testing process:

  • Attitude is the key! Encourage your children to do their best.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast and bring a healthy snack to school.
  • Be on time to school and avoid being absent.
  • Review math and reading concepts taught by classroom teachers throughout the year.
  • Talk to your children about each days testing. Encourage them to answer all test questions, write legibly, relax, and stay calm.

Continue to let me know if you have any questions or concerns as our goal is to provide the best instruction, support, and quality customer service to all of our families.

Chad Miller

Sincerely,

Chad Miller
